Strange cults

The Challenge of the Cults by Maurice C Burrell. (InterVarsity Press. £1.60) THIS BOOK examines the beliefs of seven strange cults — The Worldwide Church of God, Family of Love. Unification Church, Divine Light Mission, Transcendental Meditation. Hare Krishna and Scientology.

The author. in an opening chapter. describes their general characteristics such as their messianic zeal, their claim to exclusive truth, their group superiority and their strict discipline. At the end of each section he tabulates their main differences from orthodox Christianity. This is an interesting exposure of the strange beliefs and ways of life of these cults.

One wonders why they gain so many adherents. The author writes "I have endeavoured to describe clearly how each originated. what their adherents believe and practise. how they seek to spread their views",
