HABSBURGS' RETURN Litvinov in Favour of Concordat with Vatican

The Berliner Tageblatt publishes the somewhat sensational news, states our Russian correspondent, that Litvinov has pronounced himself in favour of a concordat between the U.S.S.R. and the Vatican, urged by M. Benesh, the Czechoslovak Foreign Secretary.

The Soviet Foreign Commissar is said to favour this idea, but in return insists that Czechoslovakia should withdraw her objections against a Habsburg restoration.

In Litvinov's opinion, an Austrian monarchy would become a strong bulwark against the expansion of nazist Germany. Communist Russia in the role of restorer of the oldest monarchy in Europe is something quite unexpected!
