MINDSZENTY

VIENNA

A Hungarian priest who arrived in Vienna from Budapest last week brought a report that a Russian heart specialist is seeing Cardinal Mindszenty almost daily. •

The Cardinal is said to be in a critical condition.

Cardinal Mindszenty's new prison is a building in Koebanya, a Buda pest suburb. He was taken there after being brought back recently from the Tatra Mountains.

This building, said the priest, is surrounded by barbed wire, and a searchlight battery has been posted in order to foil any attempt to free the Cardinal.

TOGLIATTI PROTEST At night a special detachment of guards, commanded by hand-picked Communist officers, cordons off the neighbourhood.

Palmiro Togliatti, Italian Communist leader. is said to have protested at the latest meeting of the Cominform in Budapest against the brutal methods marking persecution of religion in Eastern Europe. News of such religious persecution, he stated, constitutes a severe handicap for Communist activity in Western European countries.
