British director Michael Winterbottom has made an strange mix of films, ranging in quality from the brilliant to the pointless. His latest is about a family recovering from the death of the wife (and mother) in a car crash. Colin Firth plays the widowed academic; Catherine Keener and Hope Davis also star. It is a gentle, tender film, though some critics complain that dramatically it falls a little flat
