THE Italian Senate firmly rejected the Abortion Bill brought before them on Tuesday. The failure of the bill has taken political observers by surprise. When Senator Amintore Fanfani, the Christian Democrat presiding officer announced the result of the vote, the supporters of the bill were amazed at their defeat. They had been assured of sufficient support to get the bill through. It is clear some senators took advantage of the secret ballot to kill the bill.
