MRS FITZHERBERT AND THE PRINCE REGENT

Sia,-In Mr Anstruther's review of the latest life of Mrs Fitzherbert, reference Is made to the gory scene which met the frightened eyes of Mrs Fitzherbert and forced her to promise marriage to the Prince Regent.

Another explanation has been given elsewhere of the blood that bespattered the floor of the room and the body of the Prince-an explanation which I suggest is more in harmony with the selfish and brutal character of the Fourth of the Hanoverian Dinosaurs.

This explanation is that the blood came from the bowl of a surgeon who had just performed the then universal operation of blood-letting.
