Religious drama festival

Leicestershire's week-long religious drama festival begins today. It will open this evening with an inaugural lecture given by Dr Martin Browne in Vaughan College, Leicester, at 7.30 pm.

Half an hour later, the Open Door Youth Theatre will perform "Belshazzar" in the parish church of Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. "Belshazzar," a rock opera written by Peter Brine, is based on the account of the writing on the wall from the Book of Daniel.

The Newtown Linford Crusaders will stage a production of "The Vigil" by Ladislav Fodor, an imaginative treatment of a familiar theme. The play is a courtroom drama in which a gardener is on trail for stealing a body from a tomb.

On Sunday the Lansdowne Youth Workshop will restage their highly successful production "Rock", a musical based on the life of St Peter, in the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester. Die tickets are 85p.

The programme for the rest of the week will include workshops on dance and religion, two different plays on Noah, and miscellanies of poetry, music and mime.
