Vatican paper attacks sterilisation

THE Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has rapped the use of sterilisation as a means of population control. Echoing recent testimony before the United Nations Population Commission by American Mgr James T. McHugh, the paper's chief commentator on moral issues, Franciscan Father Gino Concetti, said that sterilisation could never be used for the sake of political or demographic goals.

"Of its very nature," Father Concetti wrote, "direct sterilisation is and remains an evil act. No human decision can make it good."
