We regret we cannot guarantee the inclusion of Inshore,' engagements received later than midday on the Monday prior to putairation_
not shared. The disciples provided for each other the support and encouragement that would be necessary for the journey. As congregations, and as a Church, we come together to provide that mutual support without which our faith will struggle to survive. There will be many times when our example is support for another. We, in our turn, will often he carried by the faith of those around us.
Jesus placed great emphasis on the preparations for the journey. If they were to be effective, the disciples would have to aban don many things they took for granted. "He instructed them to take nothing for the journey except a staff no bread, no haversack, no coppers for their purses." Only one thing was necessary for the disciples if they were to cony the love of God to the world: that this love should be alive in their hearts. We, who claim to know the love of God, can spend a disproportionate amount of energy worrying about the clutter that fills our lives. Jesus was anxious that his disciples set off with as little as possible, lest the clutter rake the place that belonged to Himself alone.
The reading from the prophet Amos emphasises another aspect of discipleship. Amos, a native of Jerusalem in the 8th century BC, was drawn to the prosper
ous kingdom of northern Israel. Amos took with him the fundamental values of Israel's faith: a trust in God as man's only lasting salvation, and a compassion for the poor that reflected God's love for his people. In the 'feel good' society of the northern kingdom Amos was like a fish out of water. Nobody wanted to listen. This did not prevent Amos from speaking. In our own society many will dismiss the gospel and its values as outmoded and unenlightened. We will be invited to go back to the dark ages where we belong.
Amos refused to be silent. Silence gives credibility to the abuses that disturb our hearts.
Paul's letter to the Ephesians put into words the heart of the apostolate. We cannot go forth into the world unless we have something to say. Paul puts into words the joy that we carry within ourselves. We are blessed, not because of ourselves, but because the Father has chosen us before the foundation of the world. Our lives are not meaningless. Each and every moment we live through love in the presence of God. In prayer we allow this graciousness to take hold of our hearts. The knowledge that this brings is the only thing we need for our journey through life.
Compared to this, everything else is clutter.
