CANON R. A. ILES An illuminated album containing the names of over 400 parishioners and a cheque for a substantial sum were presented on Tuesday last week to Canon R. A. Iles, rector of St. George's, Taunton, to mark the ocsasion of the silver jubilee of his ordination.
Canon Iles is a member of a Westcountry family; his home was at Fairford, Gloucestershire, and he has kinsmen in Somerset, one of whom, Dr. A. J. H. Iles, Mayor of Taunton, was present at the largely-attended gathering.
The presentation was made by Col. C. Walmesley, chairman of the committee responsible.
THE REV. T. BIRD, D.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Bird, recently appointed to English Martyrs, visited his late parish of St. Philip's, Smethwick, on Thursday, November 3. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the crowded congregation at Solemn Benediction given by Dr. Bird, assisted by Fr. Farrell, parish priest, and
Fr. Brewster. More than 300 people attended a social which followed, when a Spiritual Bouquet and cheque for £200 were presented to him. Fr. Farrell presided and welcomed Dr. Bird home. Mr. Francis Garvey, chairman of the committee, offered on behalf of the parishioners and friends, congratulations and thanks to Dr. Bird for his zealous work among them, crowned by the consecration of the church in 1937.
When he came to the parish there was a debt of £1,750, and, when he left, £2,000 towards school extensions was already in hand.
