nN Monday, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Forte John XXIII drove to St. Mary Major's on the Esquiline where he prayed before the picture of Our Lady Salus populi Romani in the Borghese chapel.
On his way there. he stopped to pray at the flower-wreathed column in the Piazza di Spagna which was erected in 1857 to commemorate Pope Pius 1X's proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. In the morning, firemen of the Rome Fire Brigade had climbed up extension ladders to place a garland of flowers on the bronze statue of Oa Lady which surmounts the column,
