TNVALUABLE to the student -Iof English and literature arc two books published by Allen Lane The Penguin Press. They are two more volumes of the Penguin Companion to literature, Britain and the Commonwealth (£3) and The U.S.A. and Latin America
(£2.50), joining volumes already published, that on `Europe', and one entitled 'Classical, Byzantine, Oriental, African.'
The main function of these works is to enable the student to discover rapidly the significance of a writer, the kind of interest his writing had, the main highlights of his career and his chief works, and where further information on him can be obtained.
The entries arc in alphabetical order, by author. The American volume covers all important writers from Settlement days, but the greatest amount of information is on those of the 20th century.
The volume dealing with Britain and the Commonwealth lists practically every writer of note from earliest times. C.J.
