Seven new blesseds
POPE JOHN Paul II put seven people on the road to sainthood last Sunday during a beatification ceremony in St Peter's Square.
During the ceremony, the Pontiff made an impassioned cry for peace: "I desire to share with you and entrust to the Lord the anguish and concern aroused in us in this delicate moment of the international life," the Pope told pilgrims. "Let us renew to Him the prayer for peace: 'Give to us, Lord, peace in our days!"
Among the seven new blesseds was Nikolaus Gross, journalist who was hanged by the Nazis in 1945. The Pope said that the German martyr lived "in the darkest period of the 20th century for Germany. He opposed the national socialist ideology with Christian hope. His love for the Church and truth were the priority".
