Africa appeal heads for Lim

THE BISHOPS' appeal for the drought in Africa has reached £600,000. Generous sums from Southwark diocese arriving at Cafod's Brixton offices are swelling the total which Cafod hope will reach £1 million.

The Westminster diocesan collection will he held on July 15.

One Gambian missionary told Cafod: "Many wells in the rural areas were dry in March and April this year. People are Idesperately trying to deepen them as the water level drops. Women leave home at 4 am to dig for water. They scrape the ground until a muddy trickle appears . „" Trocaire, the Irish Catholic Agency for World Development has allocated £800,000 for Africa, Asia and Latin America. All but four of these grants are for long term development whch may help to prevent future crises. Emergency grants include £22,000 for Mozambique, £11,000 for Nigerian projects and £10,000 for Ethiopia.
