Irish milestone

IRELAND'S first nondenominational professorship of theology has been awareded to Dr Sean Freyne, a former Professor of New Testament at the Pontifical University of Maynooth.

Dr Freyne will start his new job at Trinity College Dublin. in January. He was chosen for the post by Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian churchmen.

His chair at Trinity will be in the school of Hebrew, Biblical and Theological Studies. The appointment is part of the arrangements for teaching academic theology at Trinity, introduced last year.

Dr Freyne is now lecturing at the University of Queensland, Australia and has had a distinguished academic career.

In 1965, he was awarded a degree of Doctor of Divinity by the Angelicum University.

1-or some years, he taught as Professor of Biblical Studies at St Columban's Missionary Seminary at Dalgan Park, Navan, Between 1973 and 1975 he was Professor of New Testament at the Pontifical University of Maynooth and in 1976 he was made Professor of New Testament at Loyola University, New Orleans, a post he held until 1979.
