Church re-ordered to mark centenary

OUR photograph shows Bishop Emery (centre), Fr Anthony Fagan (left) and Canon Desmond Ciese of Wantage, with other local priests, offering Mass on the altar of St Mary's Church, East Hendred, Wantage, Oxfordshire on the occasion of Its recently being re-ordered for the Mass.

St Mary's Is one of the oldest Catholic churches in Oxfordshire and the re-ordering ceremony was carried out to a plan by the parish priest, Fr Fagan. This was during a celebration to mark the centenary of the death of the founder of the church, John Joseph Eyston, Bishop of Portsmouth.

The RI Rev Anthony Emery, Bishop of Portsmouth consecrated the repositioned altar and congratulated the parishioners on the beauty of their church and the excellence of the ceremony.

After the Mass there was a reception provided by Mr Thomas More Eyston and the Lady Agnes Eyston, in the grounds of Hendred House.
