POPE PAUL has appointed a commission, headed by Cardinal Roy of Quebec, to promote a bigger role in the Church for the laity. Four of its members are lay people.
They will study and execute the Vatican Council's recommendations to set up a centre to ,provide information on lay apostolic work, and to create an organisation for bettering the lot of the poor.
The vice-president is Bishop Castelli, secretary of the Italian Episcopal Conference, and the secretary is Mgr. Achille Glorieux, who was secretary of the Vatican Council Commission for the Lay Apostolate.
The four lay members are Miss Rosemary Goldie of Australia, executive secretary of the Permanent Committee for International Congresses of the Lay Apostolate; Dr. Johannes Schauff of Germany; Prof. Auguste Vanistendael of Belgium, general secretary of the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions, and Signor Vittorino Veronese, Director-General of UNESCO
