THE ART OF THE MATTER SIR,-THE CATHOLIC HERALD cannot be

too highly commended for its efforts to bring before its readers a religious art that is not debased and pietistic. At the same time, one should beware of being too critical of people who fail to understand what it is all about, and they are the majority of the clergy and the faithful. It is not merely a matter of bad art, but concerns a mode of religious thought and practice that goes back 500 years. You must first show people why the ineffableness and pietism produced by the humanism of the Renaissance is fundamentally wrong as opposed to what is sometimes called the " Theocentheism " of medieval art. You will have to show why the ideals behind the works of ha Angelico, Raphael, Guido Reni and the rest, are false; and it is those ideals that are still the background of religious thought and practice at the present day. But are they false ? The fact that religious art became debased during the last .150 years is not necessarily due to those ideals, but because being one of the common arts, it suffered in the general corruption and destruction caused by the commercialism of the Industrial Revolution. It is a twofold problem, and the an of the matter is by no means the heart of the matter.
