THE Holy Father's encyclical in no way affects me personally, but I can appreciate the enormous problem it must present to many.
However. I cannot agree with Mr. St. John-Stevas when he says "priests must not remain silent," and that it is imprudent for bishops to use the threat of suspension. Does he realise what harm a dissenting priest can do?
Mr. St. John-Stevas suggests that many priests will leave the Church if they are prevented from speaking out. I venture to suggest that MaSseS of the faithful will leave the Church if priests openly flout their bishops.
Surely the best thing for a priest to do, is to tell his superior in private of his misgivings, not to air his grievances in public?
