CARDINAL TIEN h a s lived in exile from the Chinese mainland since 1949. In the intervening years. he has constantly called attention to the plight of Catholics in China. Born in 1890, he was ordained in 1918, and in 1939, when a monsignor, he made a memorable trip to Rome, travelling by horsecart 200 miles t hrovgh Chinese and Japanese battlelines to be consecrated Titular Bishop of Ruspe. He was made a Cardinal in 1946 and is now Administrator Apostolic of Taipei, capital of Formosa.
