INDEPENDENCE PILGRIMAGE FROM NIGERIA

WHILE 13.000 Moslem Nigerians are on pilgrimage in Mecca, more than 80 Catholics are preparing for .a flying pilgrimage to Fatima, Lourdes, and Rome.

They will leave Lagos on June 25 and return two weeks later.

It will he Nigeria's second national pilgrimage to Lourdes. Two years ago 57 pilgrims made the journey.

The Independence Year pilgrimage will be led by Bishop Nwedo of Umuahia, Eastern Nigeria who was consecrated a year ago,

Each pilgrim is paying £1 80. and the pilgrimage has been i won by several as prizes in competitions.

The pilgrimage will consecrate Nigeria to Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of Fatima.

Miss Pauline Gilmartin, a teacher at St. Tereas's College, lbadan, who comes from Whalley Range, Manchester, England has organised the pilgrimage.

Pilgrims will wear a Britishmade green and white badge containing the words: "Nigeria Independence Year, Fatima, Lourdes, Rome." In Rome. the pilgrims hope to have an audience with the Pope. who is to send a special envoy to the Independence celebrations in October.
