Auction raises thousands for St Chad's Cathedral

AN AUCTION has raised more than £17,000 for the development of St Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham. writes Peter Jennings.

One of the prize lots was a rare piece of stained glass designed by A W Pugin. The successful bidder was Phil Cox, whoas later congratulated Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Birmingham.

The auction took place at the Mardi Gras Ball, held at a Birmingham hotel.

The fundraising event, generously supported by a number of local businesses, and the comedian Don Maclean, who served as a masterful auctioneer.

The stained glass came from the old Bishop's House situated opposite St Chad's Cathedral. The building was demolished in 1960 to make way for an underpass through central Birmingham.
