Beatification cause for an Indian nun

Cardinal Tisserant, Dean of the Sacred College. now touring India, has opened in Bharananganam, Travancore, a diocesan court to enquire into the cause of the beatification of an Indian nun, Sister Alphonsa, who died in 1946 at the age of 36.

Sister Alphonsa, a member of a wealthy family, spent most of her religious life in bed as an invalid. Many cures have been claimed through her intercession and people visit her tomb from all over South India.

Cardinal Tisserant has been associated with her cause from its earliest stage. Two years ago he wrote to Bishop Vayalil saying that the Holy Office is pleased with the prospect of having "a real daughter of India raised to the altars."
