No burden for Church says Ministry
CONSIDERABLE anxiety has been felt about the recommendation made in the Report of the Pritchard Committee on the Rating of Charities and Kindred Bodies that the exemption of voluntary schools from rates should he repealed.
This matter has been taken up with the Ministry of Education and the Secretary of the Catholic Education Council, Mr. R. A. G. O'Brien, quotes below from a reply which he has recently received from the Ministry:
"The Government have received representations from a number of other bodies concerned. and will consider them together with the recommendations of the Committee before any proposals for legislation are framed.
"In the meantime, I am to say that. whatever decisions on the Pritchard Report may ultimately be reached the Government would in no circumstances legislate in such a way as to place any rate burden on the Church authorities responsible for voluntary schools in respect of the use of the premises for school purposes."
