VIII—Who Reproach The Church ?

Brunetiere of the Academie francaise, a great convert, has made the following little catechism: Who reproach the Church for claiming faith for revealed dogma?

Those who believe in the worst journals and often the most ridiculous superstitions.

Who reproach the Church for debasing man?

Those who claim the ape for ancestor, luck for master, pleasure for rule and annihilation for end.

Who reproach the Church for being intolerant?

Those who allow no one to hold opinions other than their own.

Who reproach the Church as being the enemy of knowledge?

Those who regardless of liberty have shut Catholic schools.

Who reproach the Church for being the enemy of the people?

Those who are ignorant of history and who persecute the works of charity established by religion, Who fling abuse against the Church and against her teachings?

Those who know not one word of religion or those who are impeded by its teachings.
