DR. DOWNEY EXPRESSES CATHOLIC CONCERN

By .a Stag Reporter

Preaching to a crowded congregation in the Pro-Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas, Liverpool, on Sunday last, Archbishop Downey expressed his concern, and that of all Catholics, at the charges brought against Protestant leaders in Communist Bulgaria.

" I am sure." he said, " that 1 am expressing not only my own sentiments and those of the Catholics of this Archdiocese..but also those of all Catholics throughout the country, when I say how profoundly shocked and grieved we are at the charges now brought against the imprisoned fifteen leaders of the United Evangelical Church in Bulgaria, four of whom, the heads of the Congregational, Baptist and Pentecostal Churches. together with the Supervisor of the Methodist Church. are members of the Supreme Evangelical Council.

" The hackneyed charges of treason, espionage and currency frauds, are brought against these distinguished ecclesiastics, and the brazen assurance given that in a preliminary investigation they have confessed their guilt.

" It is the same technique as in the trials of Cardinal Mindszenty and the Lutheran Bishop Ordass in Hungary. and it is high time that a stop were put to this Communistorganised assault on Christianity."
