A PRO-LIFE group has asked Tony Blair to publicly repudiate his support for abortion rights and embryo research.
John Smeaton, director of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, wrote a letter to Mr Blair listing policies that the former PM endorsed which contradict Church teaching.
He said Mr Blair's record was a matter of "justified concern" to people in the pro-life movement regardless of their faith. The letter quoted John Paul It's encyclical Evangelium Vitae, which stipulates that it is "never licit" to obey a law allowing abortion or to campaign or vote in favour of that law. Mr Smeaton said he would be "grateful" if Mr Blair explained whether he repudiated his pro-abortion voting record.
