Ordinations

Noltirigham.-Bishoo Ellis on Sunday at Our Lady and St. Patrick's Church. Nottingham. conferred the priesthood upon the Rev. Stanley Borrows (Nottingham) and the Rev. Lawrence Bagguley, A.A., and the diaconate upon the Revs'. Austin Arthurs and Joseph Hogan. C.S.Sp., of St. Joseph's College, Upton Hall.

OBITUARY

Canon F. W. Gilbert

Canon Francis Walter Gilbert. pa ri.sh priest at Leigh-on-Sea for 35. years. died last week, aged 77.

Born at Homerion, London, Canon Gilbert was educated at St. Edmund's College, Ware, and ordained at Oscott College. Birmingham, in 1901. He went to St. Charles's, Ogle Street, in the West End of London. as curate, moving in 1903 to Grays as parish priest, and remained there until his appointment to Leigh in 1917.

When the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1925, Canon Gilbert dispensed with an architect's service, drew up his own plans. acted as contractor and employed his own workmen.

The parishes of Rayleigh, Rochford, Canvey Island and Bennett have all developed from Leigh.

Canon Gilbert celebrated his golden jubilee as a priest last year.
