Catholic writer's tree safe

A TREE PLANTED by the Catholic author, GK Chesterton, has been saved at the eleventh hour.

Plans to build flats near the plane tree would have threatened the more-than-100 year old tree, but Hollywood film set designer, Peter Mullins, realised what was happening just in time.

Mr Mullins believed that some development could still go ahead, but emphasised the importance of the area because of its literary associations.

Now the historic tree is safe again, thanks to the timely intervention of the Kensington and Chelsea councils, and remains a fittingly majestic tribute to the creator of the celebrated Father Brown books.
