Cardinal Newman

I think the "leaflet" referred to in your October Chronicle of October 11 was taken from the "Oxford Movement Centenary Supplementary Missal", published in 1933 and compiled by "Clement Humilis" (pen-name of the Rev J. L. Piowden-Wardlaw, an Anglican incumbent in Cambridge).

This provided a "Proper"! for Mass on the anniversaries of various Tractarian and postTractarian notables, together with a kind of "Second Nocturn" which, it was suggested, might be read to the congregation before the service. I believe the book had a very restricted sale and an even more restricted use. I doubt whether any part of it is used anywhere today.
