Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Angeles, collapsed during the Mass at the opening of Vatican II's third session on Monday. The Cardinal is 78. He was carried out of St. Peter's and given first aid, and then taken to a local hospital. One of his assistants said his collapse was caused by the heat and that his condition was not grave.

The Cardinal was the centre of a recent controversy in the United States when it was alleged that the Los Angeles archdiocese had insufficiently backed the Negroes' fight for civil rights. One of his priests wrote to the Holy See asking for the Cardinal's removal.
