ACONSISTORY is to be held in St. Peter's on September 26, when Pope Paul will ask the Council Fathers for their votes on whether the first African martyrs' of the modern era should be canonised.
The martyrs died for their faith dining a violent persecution in 1886 by King Mwanga I of Uganda. One hundred Catholics of a recently established community were itnprisoned.
In all, 22 laymen and catechumens were killed together with a number of non-Catholics. They went to their death with great courage, proclaiming their religion
to the last and forgiving their murderers.
They were beatified only 34 years later in 1920. 1 he canonisation. the first of Pope Paul's pontificate. will probably take place in St. Peter's on Mission Sunday, October 18.
The official decision will be ;innounced after the Consistory.
