Golf rage

IT MAY have been St Patrick's Day this week but Irish eyes aren't smiling among the Catenians. The Catholic businessmen's network has aggravated English-Irish tensions with an incendiary cartoon in Catena, its stylish monthly journal. The Dublin Catenian Circle trilled its objections to the "insulting antiIrish cartoon" in this month's issue.

The cartoon, which depicts a rustic Irishman offering his shillelagh as a golfing aid — presumably to his plus-foured English betters accompanied by the caption "The magic of Ireland", was drawn by one Brian Bagnall of the Guildford Circle.

I suggest the Surrey-based scribbler should be forced to caddie at Portmarnock — the Emerald Isle's top golf course — as penance.
