Call to reveal 'germ war' tests

THE JUSTICE and Peace Cornmission was urged this week to put pressure on the Governntent to reveal what is being done in Britian to test chemical and biological weapons.

The issue has been raised because of reports that the Soviet Union is using poison gas against Muslim rebels in Afghanistan.

A file of evidence detailing British experiments with chemical weapons was handed in to the Commission on Tuesday by officials of the Church of Scientology. Copies were also taken to the Church of England and the Jewish Board of Deputies. The submission said: "Evidence indicates that the United Kingdom has been involved in similar testing and development of chemical and biological warfare weapons (to that carried out in the United States)."

"It is our view that the public has a right to know what their governments are doing, particularly when it affects their health, the health of their children and their environment."

The Church of Scientology claimes to have evidence showing that Britain developed a nerve gas bomb at Porton Down in the 1950s in contravention oldie 1925 Geneva Protocol. Also that Britain cooperated with the United States in a wideranging research programme on all aspects of biological warfare, and has been secretly spraying potentiallly harmful chemicals and bacteria over large areas of England and Scotland. The submission concluded: "We are seeking to have steps taken which will close the door on any future experiments. testing and stockpiling which pose a threat to human life."

In October 1978 the bishops' conference called on the Government to eliminate the development and production of all chemical weapons.
