THE record-breaking speed with which the controversial beatification of the founder of Opus Dei has reached completion stemmed not from pressure from the powerful organisation but from the Vatican's stream-lining of procedure, the postulator of the prospective saint's cause said this week.

Fr Flavio Capucci, who collated more than 6,000 pages of testimony to the virtue of the Spanish-born Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, dismissed the barrage of criticism over the Pope's decision to approve the beatification just 17 years after his death.

Allegations that Escriva wwas unfit for sainthood have surrounded an intense debate over the beatification,
