Church Bells of Belgium

A special Commission for the recovery of bells seized by the Germans during the occopation of Belgium has been appointed by the Belgian Ministry of Public Instruction.

During 1943, despite vigorous protests from Cardinal Van Roey, the Germans confiscated 4,566 bells in the first half of the year, a total of some 7,000,000 pounds of bronze. The bells were shipped into Germany.

The looting of church/belfries by the Germans was not carried on unhampered, By devious methods, the programme of bell seizures was so handicapped that Luxembourg was able to keep the majority of its hells.
