Solomon, whose playing always combines intellect and feeling in nicely-balanced proportion, is perhaps the best-equipped of all our pianists to bring a modern work to the notice of the concert public. He first played Arthur Bliss' pianoforte concerto to the Americans in 1939, bringing it to this country a year later. On Saturday, with Sir Adrian Boult and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, he gave the impression that he was now on completely familiar terms with the composers thought, and whenever the score allowed he land the orchestra with him) underlined the passages to which the term " beauty " in the old accepted sense of the word can unshamedly he applied.
