Established a community of monks on Monte Vergine, Italy, who lived under a rule similar to that of St. Benedict. He foretold th‘date of his death and died peacefully, as he said, in 1142.

These two brother martyrs have been compared to " two olive trees and two candlesticks mentioned in the apocalypse which shine before the Lord." They were martyred under Julian the Apostate in 362.

Saturday, June 28. St. Irenaeus. (Red.) An ardent apologist, St. Irenaeus was also a theologian. With his ears full of the last echoes of apostolic teaching, he was the first to write a reasoned summary of our faith. He gave the death-blow to gnostic heresy towards the end of the second century.
