TUESDAY marked the centenary of the arrival in England of the Ladies of Mary three Belgian nuns who travelled in secular clothes from Malines to Croydon to open a school for middle-class girls.
Other convents and schools were subsequently founded in Britain, Ireland. California, Uganda and Brazil and today the Ladies of Mary are divided into three provinces, centred on Belgium, • England and Cali. fornia.
The scope of their work has widened to include nursing in the missions and various forms of social welfare activities, as well as teaching in all kinds of schools and colleges.
