WILL you allow me to correct the picture evoked by your correspondent's pejorative phrases in. his "Irish Diary" of June 6 by citing the actual facts?
The principal socio-economic factors in life are food, shelter and clothing. The Irish are the best-fed people in the world, the best-housed in Europe, and a badly-dressed person is an oddity, More than 50 per cent. of our household premises are —or are in rapid process of becoming—occupier-owned.
There is a definite and continuous levelling-upwards as far as wages are concerned. Every second house has TV, every fourth house a car. There is free education to almost G.C.E. level. and free health services for the necessitous.
