Catholics and socialism

WE have been printing in the last few weeks a number of letters in which the Church's attitude to Socialism is discussed.

Such discussions tend to develop into a somewhat barren interpretation of the actual words used by Popes in the different pronouncements on the social question. We have to remember that in a sociological context it is the principle rather than the actual words used which matter. This must be the case since society is constantly moving, and at different times and in different places the same word can be understood in widely different senses.
