We regret we C1111110( guarantee the inclusion of bishops' engagements received later than midday on the Monday prior to publication. imagine the astonished silence as the paralytic was placed at the feet of Jesus. To the casual observer, it would have appeared that the first and most immediate need of the paralytic was the restoration of his useless limbs. Jesus reached beyond the most immediate symptom of this man's broken life. He spoke to his heart. " My child. your sins are forgiven." We are tempted to spend.a great deal of time manicuring the outward appearance of our lives. We know the frailty that lies within, the frailty that is hidden from the eyes of the world. This Jesus addressed in the paralytic as he forgave his sins. True healing. be it physical or spiritual, begins at the heart orwhat we are. Jesus was not willing to be the cosmetic plaster covering the suffering of the paralytic. His healing began with words of understanding and forgiveness,

words that went to the heart.

Human pride is at its worst when it can find nothing but fault in the goodness of others. This we see in the reaction of the scribes who attended Jesus in the house. "How can this man talk like that? He is blaspheming. Who can forgive sins but God?" Jesus answered their challenge with a further challenge. "Which of these is easier: to say your sins are forgiven, or to say get up. pick

up your stretcher and walk?"

At first sight it would seem easier to speak words of forgiveness than to raise a broken body from its stretcher. We owselves speak words of forgiveness all the time. The words come easily. The reality takes longer. Our sinful humanity finds it difficult to heal the wounds of the past. Despite our words of forgiveness, we cannot, without God's help. free ourselves from past hurt. The sinner, and those sinned against, are caught up in an unbreakable circle of pain. Jesus broke that circle when he said to the paralytic, and to all sinners, your sins are forgiven. These were not empty words. They healed the heart of the paralytic is such a way that he was able to break free from the past. He stood up, took hold of his life, and walked into the future with confidence.

We live in a. time of great uncertainty. Mistrust and hurt divide Many nations, Clouding the future with threatened violence. It is for us to bring that world into the presence of Christ.

He alone can speak the words of forgiveness that heal the heart. Only then will the nations speak to each other in words of forgiveness rather than violence. Only then will we walk towards the future with the inner confi dence of peace.
