-ISRAEL has compensated Christian churches in Jenisalem for war damage to their property during the 1948 and 1967 Arab-Israeli wars, the Government Press Office has announced.
The damage compensation agreements were signed for the Government by Minister of Justice Yaakov Shapiro and for the churches by representatives of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox patriarchates and of the Custody of the Holy Land, the Franciscans, who represent Catholic interests in the Holy Land.
The churches represented are considered to have custody of nine-tenths of the Christian holy places in Jerusalem.
A spokesman for the Israeli Ministry of Justice declined to disclose the sum involved. However, the Jerusalem Post, the city's English-language ckuily, said it is believed to be more than a million pounds. The compensation is being paid "without regard to the party by whom the damage was caused."
