NATIONALISTS ADAMANT ABOUT BASQUE FUTURE

It is reported from St. Jean de Luz that a Spanish diplomat from the Nationalist side has had an interview with a Bilbao personality in close touch with the Basque Government.

The conversation, which is said to be semi-official, was in reference to the terms of the proclamation recently spread in Bilbao by Nationalist aeroplanes.

General Franco's representative was asked whether the full autonomy of the Basque country would ever be recognised by Franco. Though the diplomat was able to assure the Bilbao authorities that the ancient " rights" of the Basques would be recognised and protected, he denied that there was any chance of the autonomy at present demanded by the Basque Government.
