From the Passionist house at Mount Argus, Dublin, the death is announced of Fr. Berchmans Byrne, C.F., at the age of seventy-one. England joins with Ireland, his native land, in mourning the loss of an active missionary worker who had many associations with both countries.
Father Berchmans belonged to a Dublin family which has given a number of its members to the priesthood. After early studies in Ireland he entered the Passionist Congregation and made his profession at
Broadway, Worcestershire. He was ordained in 1894 by the late Dr. Bernard O'Reilly, Bishop of Liverpool. Work followed in various Passionist houses in England, and at the Paris centre, and in England, Fr. Berchmans preached at a number of missions and retreats. Most of his priestly life, however, was passed at Mount Argus.
