Mgr O'Douoghue's new post is expected to cover the West pastoral area of the archdiocese, 'home to 450,000 Catholics. The post has been vacant since Bishop Mahon's death in January 1992.

Mgr O'Donoghue, who has served as Cathedral administrator since 1990, told the Catholic Herald he is "delighted to be invited to serve as auxiliary bishop to the Cardinal".

He added that to be a bishop was a tremendous privilege "but also an awesome task and responsibility."
