Hume pastoral letter on diocesan debt

A PASTORAL letter from Cardinal Hume is to be read in all churches in Westminster diocese on May 1 as the first part of a programme to reduce the debt from £6.5 million pounds to £4.5 million.

The programme has been worked out after widespread consultation at deanery and parish levels and will involve publication of all diocesan accounts.

The details of the debt, which has grown largely because of the effect of high interest rates on the school building programme, were first revealed in the Catholic Herald in February.
