Youth 2000 — a home-grown movement

From Ms Josie Callaghan

Sir, I would like to express our thanks to the author of the article (Feb 8) regarding Youth 2000. Although a very uplifting article I feel it is important to clarify the origins of Youth 2000. which was founded by a young English student, Ernest Williams, in 1990. This was in response to an appeal, made by the Pope at World Youth Day in Santiago de Compostela in 1989. for young people to become shining heralds of the Gospel. This in fact makes Youth 2000 a "home grown initiative-, started by young people and run by young people, in cooperation with the clergy and older people for young people.

We are indebted to the tireless help of all. including the Franciscans of the Renewal, who have allowed us to begin to respond to the Pope's call.

Yours faithfully, JOSIE CALLAGHAN Youth 2000, National Office
