I write to complain of your statement in the main

story of May I I that "the passion with which political and religious matters are felt by Spaniards . . . is at least better than the materialism and indifference noticeable in other countries but conspicuous by their absence in Spain." Surely you should put this as your opinion, not as fact?

My opinion, based on some observation, is that materialism does exist in Spain and it is naive not to expect it anywhere on this earth. How can you bear to prefer passion, and Spanish passion at that, in "political and religious matters," no matter what? If the theory of Christianity does not convince on this. try the pragmatism of asking Vietnamese and Belfast people 'what they prefer. K. F. Livesey 22 Kingswood Close, Englefield Green.
