begin to lay bare the secrets of our hearts as we take up our palms and walk in procession. We walk with Christ and proclaim him as the Son of David, the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We remember how quickly the enthusiasm of the Jerusalem crowd evaporated. As we take their words upon our lips, our secret thoughts are laid bare. We realise how changeable are our own enthusiasms and commitments.

Matthew's account of the Passion continues this examination of our lives. Betrayal

awaited Jesus at the very moment that he fed his disciples, binding himself to them

forever in the Eucharist. I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me.' We are shocked by this betrayal. and yet we know that we who share the table of the Lord so often betray him. We are deeply moved by the innocence of Christ. With Peter we want to stand by him. 'Though all lose faith in you, I will never lose faith.' In Peter's threefold denial we are confronted with the broken promises of our own lives. Like the disciples who did not have the strength to keep awake for one hour, we realise how little of our strength or time is truly given to the Lord. We are ready to condemn Judas for betraying Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, and yet, in mindless ways, we can betray him for a good deal less. We condemn Pilate for recognising the innocence of Christ, only to wash his hands of the consequences that were to follow. With our own indifference we can wash our hands of the innocent suffering that confronts us in many parts of the world. This journey, begun with Christ, is painful precisely because it lays bare the secret thoughts of our hearts.

The events of this last week laid bare the poverty of the disciples. They could save neither themselves nor their master. Like their Lord, they became powerless.

When we embrace this truth with humility and repentance, we become one with Christ. The stark truth of the cross has the power to empty us of every illusion about ourselves. Christ did not cling to his equality with God, but emptied himself. On the cross he claimed nothing for himself, not even life itself. He trusted only in the Father. `But the Father raised him up, and gave him the name which is above all other names.' The emptiness to which life brings us can be the way to life itself.
